Occasion-Based Styling: The Right Tie for Every Event
Suit ties - while less popular than they once were - can be the perfect finishing touch, capable of (if you’ll pardon the pun) tying together an ensemble with relative ease.
However, deciding which style to wear for which occasion requires a deft hand and discerning taste. Here, we give you the no nonsense Oscar Hunt guide to picking the right one, every time.
Casual ties
Sometimes you just feel like upping the ante - even if you’re wearing a relatively relaxed outfit. And whether you’re in a relaxed linen suit or a blazer and jeans, a necktie is the perfect way of scratching that itch. So, what tie to pick?
When it comes to selecting a more casual tie, consider how it can complement the other fabrics that you’re wearing. For example, if you are wearing more open weaves or rougher cloth like linen or denim, a knitted tie can be the perfect addition as it adds finesse without clashing with those items.
To keep a tie casual - and avoid it feeling like you’ve thrown on part of your work wardrobe - we also advise opting for a tie that has a squared off bottom. This demonstrates that you clearly understand the difference between more corporate and casual style and it aligns with a more relaxed aesthetic.
Job interview ties
For a job interview, a necktie is the perfect means of showing some of your personality. However, there’s a difference between sartorial flare and outright flamboyance. Our recommendation is to opt for one of three things: a more vibrant colour, a more unusual print or a more unique fabric (for example, flannel).
Once you’ve decided, then consider how you also complement your shirt and suit. For a job interview, a fail-safe option is a navy suit as this adds a sense of warmth to the wearer’s complexion and pairs easily with a range of tie colours.
Formal event ties
When it comes to balls, galas, fundraisers and everything in between, chances are you’ll be opting for one of two classic tie options: a neck tie or a bow tie.
Generally, a bow tie is only required in the event that the dress code stipulates black-tie or dinner suit. In this instance, we recommend opting for a self-tie option (there’s something undeniably chic about the imperfection of a hand-knotted bow tie) paired with the lynchpin of a timeless wardrobe: the classic tux.
For formal events that call for a standard tie, this is your licence to explore bolder patterns and colours than you would normally wear in the office. Think stripes, paisleys and dots.
Wedding ties
Choosing a wedding tie ultimately comes down to the dress code and it’s really a matter of personal taste where you take it from there. Like with formal events, this can be the perfect opportunity to let your sartorial flare shine through by experimenting with bolder patterns and colours.
Once you’ve decided, then consider how you also complement your shirt and suit. For a job interview, a fail-safe option is a navy suit as this adds a sense of warmth to the wearer’s complexion and pairs easily with a range of tie colours.
